Are there variations in ligatures like there are in mouthpieces and clarinets - i.e. should you try several of the particular make & model you are interested in before buying?

I don't think there is a whole lot of variation in the same make of ligature. You could try a few of the same kind if you really wanted to, but you probably couldn't tell them apart. Keep in mind if you get a metal ligature, you will probably want to hammer it to fit your mouthpiece.

Yes, my sound changes greatly depending on the lig. I was lucky enough to have a teacher who literially had 50 m/p, 12 barrells, and 4 or 5 ligs for me to try out. All in different combinations. My tone went from a Jr. High sound to a semi-pro sound within the hour. Good luck! Paul

The number of ligatures available is limited only by your bank balance. Can anybody in the audience really tell which one you are using? Get my drift!

I recommend (and use) the VanDoren Optimum lig with its parallel rail insert. It is expensive, but with the other insert options, it is like three ligs in one. For me, the parallel rail insert is very much like the Bonade reverse lig, but without the constant need for readjustment of the bands. Good Clarineting!!!
