 Selmer Paris Prologue...

Wow, i found some people who actually know some things about clarinets, i'm in heaven.

Alright, where do Selmer Prologue's rank in the whole scheme of what makes a good horn? I played on a Selmer Paris Omega about 4 years ago and i absolutely LOVED it, i cracked 3 R-13's in my quest for the perfect horn and finally found this Paris. But academic bankruptcy resulting in no more music grant resulting in me dropping out of college and having to sell the horn for grocery money ended that little soap opera. So now i found a Prologue for an ultra cheap *i think* $950 and i've decided to get it. The Paris Omega, i've been told, has been discontinued and this is the next best thing supposedly. Any comments or concerns about the Prologue? i can't find anything on the net about it at all.

The Selmer Prologue has the identical acoustical dimensions as the Omega Paris (not the USA Omega), so if you're familiar with the Omega Paris you'll know what the Prologue will sound like. You can still purchase new Omegas through Brook Mays Music (www.brookmays.com). You might call their 800 number and ask for a store and see if they have any used ones. The Omega Paris is a very nice clarinet with a big, full sound. I like them a lot.

GOOD, that's great to hear that it's acoustically identical to the Omega Paris. That's what i loved so much about it, the dark warm sound, it was wonderful in small ensemble settings. I could never use another horn after i first played it, everything else sounded so weak and frail. It was never hard to project and be heard when you needed to. The clarinet itself weighed almost twice as much as a Buffet, it's like the wood was SO much denser. The only thing i disliked about it was the oddly placed/fastened Eflat stopper post on the lower joint. I eventually dislodged it in the process of putting the horn together and it fell out and scooted up under something...never to be seen again. I never had the time to send it off for repairs, but only i knew it was missing and it never effect playing anyway. It always confused me that there were two Omega models. The one with the engraving on the bell just looked tacky i thought. Pictures of the Paris Omega i've seen online look nothing like the one i got from Conrads of Corydon IN. The one i had simply said Henri Paris with the leaf logo and that was it...i seem to remember an R with a circle around it too. Who knows, maybe it was a bootleg version...lol.

The Omega Paris is the one with the little leafy insignia and says Henri Paris. The USA has the engraved bell and is a very, very different instrument. The Omega Paris is an entry-level professional model and the USA is an intermediate clarinet. If you go to the Selmer website (www.selmer.com) and look up the Paris clarinets you'll find some information on the Prologue. The Omega Paris isn't offered through websites or discount catalogues---just a few specialized dealers (like Brook Mays) or if you find one from an individual. The thicker wood and different acoustical properties from the Buffet R-13 are what is making the difference in the tonal qualities and sound projection.

Tamara,

Also FYI, the Prologue is being discontinued by Selmer here in Paris and is being replaced by the Odyssée (the Odyssée is due to replace the 10SII as well). I just bought one a few weeks back, and it is a lovely entry-level professional horn. You might want to check the Prologue vs Odyssée in the US with a retailer before making your decision (don't try to find the Odyssée on Selmer.com, for obscure reasons, they are not advertising it on the web).

Perhaps we could encourage Stephane to share his experiences with his new Odyssee clarinet with the forum. It would be interesting to get his impressions about how the Odyssee plays compared to what he owned previously.
