 Selmer Odyssée
Author: Stephane

In the thread "Selmer Paris Prologue" started by Tamara, I've been encouraged by Ralph to share my experience with my new Selmer Paris Odyssée. Before I make my comments, please bare in mind that I am a new comer to the clarinet world and have very little experience with horns and playing clarinet. I am actually originally a pianist who happens to have fell in love with the clarinet a little less than 2 years ago, and have started to take lessons seriously only 6 months ago. On that note, I will never forget my very first clarinet lesson, as it was on Sept. the 11th 2001...
So please keep in mind that these comments are from a beginner who's fortunate enough to be able to afford a professional horn.

The Selmer Paris Odyssée is a new comer in what seems to be a new line at Selmer Paris. It is due to replace the Prologue and the 10SII. Its elder sister, the Artys, is due for launch shortly and should replace the 10G series. The Odyssée is available in the keys of Bb and A. The Bb has a 14.50mm bore, it is tuned to A442 (French standard) and it comes with 2 barrels (66.50mm and 64.50mm), a Selmer C85/120 mp and a BAM-like light case. Keywork is silver plated, pads are leather and the lower tenon of the upper body has a metal ring.

I can not compare it with other Selmers like the 10SII or Prologue it is due to replace as I don't have any experience with them. My two other clarinets are a plastic Yamaha (equivalent to the C20) and a Buffet E11. I really love the sound of my Odyssée which is darker than the Buffet. I like its sound emission which is easier than the E11. I like the keywork very much too. I wouldn't be able to explain the difference with the Buffet, but it gives me a feeling of greater easyness and better "easily fall under my fingers". Of course, I am comparing here a pro horn with an intermediate one and as usual all this is only a reflexion of my own subjectivity. I hope this can still give some of you some indications about this new clarinet.
