 A shorter barrel?
Author: Dan

I've tried out several new mpcs lately and two that I really liked
are -20 and -40 cents low. I believe my clarinet is OK because when I use a Pamarico crystal mpc, I'm right on zero. I understand that going below 64mm can produce all kinds of tuning problems. My question is: will a 65 or 64 mm barrel help much with the other mpcs? Thanks for your advice.

40% low seems very extreme, what sort of m.p. is that? Is it that flat throughout the range? Does it seem to have the same bore size as the crystal one. What clar. do you use? Details please.

warning, anecdote, not analysis follows:

I was getting my full boehm (German) re-built by
Guy Chadash. I sent along my two German mouthpieces
that came with it. During the final setup, where
I played, and he adjusted, he asked me if I have
a more conventional mouthpiece. I had my
5RVLyre13/88 on me and tried it. It worked better,
if different in tone. However it was way flat.
Guy indicated this is a common "Lyre" attribute.
He cut down one of his "Chadash/Buffet" barrels
on the spot, and the 5RVLyre with the now
"custom" barrel worked wonderfully.

Conclusion, do not overlook the barrel length
issue. with the right person, it can fix a
flat mouthpiece.

If one really likes a certain flat mouthpiece, it can be shortened a couple of mm on a lathe. I've done it a few times, especially on some Zinners which seem to be flatter than average. Some Portnoy mouthpieces are higher pitched and play well. One expects that mouthpieces are all the same pitch, but they don't play that way. Good Luck!!

To Jez: I have a Vito V40. The Gennusa Excellente was -40 low (beautiful soft "cushioned" sound) and the 2nd was a Selmer C85(105) which plays with a responsive nice full sound.

To Terry: Do you know the cut down length of your custom barrel?

To Wes: I like the idea of shortening the mpc but would probably have to do quite a search in the local area for someone with the proper machining tools and expertise. Is filing totally out of the question?

Thanks for all the replies.

It is really weird that the C85 played flat. They are notorious for playing sharp but are good on Selmer's especially 10G's which are on the low side even with the shorter barrell provided.

Hi!

The reason it would usually be done on a lathe is that it looks better and neater, as well as fitting better. It would take some precise filing to do it with a file but it could be possible. It has to be shortened in two places, of course and you would not wish to leave a space between the end of the mouthpiece and the clarinet. Good luck.
