Just staring to learn to play the Clarinet and read music. Bought myself a second hand Buffet B12. Any pointers, information or contact with other beginners would be useful. Thanks

Get a teacher. Even if you only go for a few lessons it will give you a bit of a head start on proper technique.

You will be disappointed later to find out that your embouchure is wrong or that your tounging is wrong.

After that practice, practice, and practice some more.

Two things:

1 - If you do not already read music, spend some time just picking out tunes by ear on the instrument. Playing along the low F scale (fingerings for which are available on this site) is easier than playing the recorder.

2 - Get a book called "Making Music for the Joy of It" by Stephanie Judy. (published by Putnam) It's aimed at adult beginners and amateurs and is loaded with good advice and common sense. Another terrific book for beginning musicians is "Classical Music for Dummies" (IDG Books).

Hi, Mark !
First of all, WELCOME to world of single reed woodwinds :)
As you can see by the above posts, lots of folks are interested in your progress. Hope you visit often.
If I may, I'll pose to you some of the many questions newcomers are most ofter asked:
Are there other clarinet players in your area? What style(s) of music do you like? Are there any groups you have in mind playing with? Are clarinet teachers available to you?
It's nice to meet you, Mark, and Happy Tootin' :)
