in Schumann's fantasy pieces for clarinet, there are two parts on the first movement that give me trouble, and as far as i remember they have not given me trouble before. one is four measures before measure B (hope it's the same for all versions) where it goes from staff D to staff D to above the staff D...every single time i play that it squeeks...and it didn't used to. i wonder if it is because of my braces that i had put on recently. is it normal for braces on the bottom teeth to cause those note changes to be harder? another place is the pickup to measure C (again, i don't know if it's the same place for all publishers, but it's the place where the long eigth-note runs begin) where it goes from B in the staff to the B above the staff...i can't seem to make the B above the staff speak right away if i slur it, so what do i do? lightly tongue?
thanks in advance for any advice

I've played that movement before, and though I don't remember where exactly the second portion you're talking about is by memory (I don't have the music on hand), there is a good way of trying to get the D to D jump. Try half-holing the altissimo D by only sliding down your LH first finger down a little off of the tone hole so that half of it is uncovered, this helps jumps in such a manner that they don't get "clunky" or hard by having to completely removing the first finger. Also, a good push of air (in both cases of your question) will more than likely help get rid of those squeeks. Always worked for me.
Let me know if that helps.

John...Another possibility for the skip upwards to the high D (instead of half holing) is using this fingering for the high D:
R (no thumb) x x x / x o x Eb(G#)
This is a good fingering to have in your arsenal for upward skips in passage similar to this one...GBK
