Does anyone know of any really good websites/books/magazines for info on the
violin/viola/'cello/double bass? I'm looking for primarily technical information: the
range of each string, what chords can be played with double/triple stops, and
special techniques for these instruments. I'm very interested in this imformation
because I'm starting to compose for strings and I've never even picked one up
except for the guitar (something which I am going to remedy very soon). I have
the basic info (range, some information on timbre, etc), but I need this to really be
comfortable with and sure of what I'm writing.
Thanks,
Marco Downs
P.S.: I'm sorry about the non clarinet questions, but I know that you guys are very
helpful and your knowledge is not limited to the clarinet.
P.S.S.: In case you're interested in anything I'm writing, I will have a website up
sometime (when I find the time to mess with that stuff) with my few finished/semi-
finished compositions. I will post that URL when it's available.

I'm quite sure there is a string-inst book [PB] of the series [which includes our Brymer] . I believe they came about via Yehudi Menuhin [sp?] in the 1980's? You can prob find it and many others in a fair sized library's collection of musical books. The Grove's Dictionary [a set of some 12+ books] should answer many of your questions. Also search the net via Yahoo, AOL, Google etc. Don

I subscribe to Strings. I don't think it would answer most of your questions here, though. For violin books, there's Yehudi Menuhin's The Violin, which isn't a very comprehensive general book but a very enjoyable discussion of a number of widely varying musical subjects. The book Don mentioned I believe is titled The Violin and the Viola and is by William Primrose.
If you have specific questions, try The Fingerboard at http://fingerboard.maestronet.com. E-mail me if you can't find something- I'm not a terribly experienced violinist but I know enough to answer basic questions.

Speaking of string instruments, has anyone seen the commercial that has aired recently (I don't recall th product), with the four (maybe it's only three) really curvy young ladies playing the violin? I'm sure some of you recognize the arangement.... I don't.....it is lively and so are they.
Wonder if it's too late to learn violin..........Hmmmm!!
