My son went through the mouthpiece collection and decided to start using a Woodwinds G8 steel ebonite mouthpiece. It has better intonation and power than his M-13 VD or my B-45.
It has a different tip curve than regular vandoren's or v12, less curved. Do we need German cut reeds, does anyone know anything about it. It sounds very nice, but the reed outline at the tip does not follow the mouthpiece.

I wouldn't get too bent out of shape with the reed and mouthpiece curve matching. The key is the reed has to seal against the face of the mouthpiece. Try this.....take the barrel and mouthpiece off the clarinet and cover the bottome end. Put the mouthpiece in your mouth (obviously with the reed still attached) and suck the air out creating a vacuum (sp?). Now take the mouthpiece out of your mouth and the reed should remain "stuck" to the mouthpiece for several seconds and then you should hear a popping sound. If this happens the reed is sealing properly against the mouthpiece and don't worry about it. Enjoy the fact that your son has a mouthpiece he likes and sounds good with, because we all how fleeting that feeling is!

First, I use a reed trimmer, getting the basic shape by fiddling the reed from side to side.
Then I use a Revlon fingernail file, available at beauty supply stores. It looks like it has diamond dust glued to it. I've used the same one for years. Hold the reed lightly near the tip between your left thumb and index finger and lightly brush the file toward the center of the tip from each side. Go across the tip, opposite to the way the reed vibrates -- not up and down.

You could try some Vandoren Black or White Masters. If the tip of the reed is still too curved, you could get a reed trimmer and clip the tip. If I trim my Black Masters with my standard clarinet reed trimmer (yes, you can get German reed trimmers), the tip is too flat and I have to sand a curve into it.
