I've decided to scrap the confusing, instrument-specific octave numbering system used at the Woodwind Fingering Guide in favor of the more standard one used here. C4 is now Middle C, rather than the 4th lowest C a given instrument can play.

Hopefully this will help remove some confusion from note naming on this forum and others.

Also, the altissimo trill chart has been lacking an A6-B6 trill fingering for quite some time. Could anyone suggest a fingering for it?

Wouldn't that be A7-B7 by the notation above?

Finger the high A in the traditional manner:

TR oxx / ooo C# and trill to high B by adding:

 TR + A key oxx / xxx C# ...GBK

One addition...in the fingering I posted for the high B, the 3rd finger (ring finger) of the right hand may be omitted on the trill. This will make the B slightly higher.

Therefore the high B would be fingered:

 TR + A key oxx / xxo C# ...GBK

I think A6-B6 is correct. Here I'm using the recommendation of the Acoustical Society of America, which concurs with the C4 reference image on this forum. It sets C as the low note of each octave, and the fourth octave begins at Middle C (= C4) and extends upward to third-line B (= B4). So the A above Middle C (second space) is A4, the A on the first ledger line above the staff is A5, and the A on the space above the fourth ledger line is A6.

I found a pdf file online that may be a good pointer. I'm referring to the A6 and B6 shown here:

Oh well. They design a good scheme to number based on the piano but mess it up by numbering starting on the lowest piano C rather than the lowest piano A. That's what threw me. I would have started on the lowest piano A, called it A1, and numbered from there going A1, B1, C1 etc. Of course we engineers tend to think a little differently and I'm sure that there is a historical reason of some kind for using the C as the basis for numbering.
