 question about selling clarinets
Author: Betsy
Date:   2001-12-16 00:44

I'm looking to sell my E-12. What would be the best way: putting an ad through the newspaper, E-bay, any other internet website, or through a store that will buy used instruments (if any one knows of any please respond)? Thanks

The classifieds on this website is how I sold my R-13.

Might be helpful to know what neck o' the woods you live in, Betsy, but, in my estimation, I don't think a one-time consignment through a store will bring you the price you want. Local newspaper ads cost a lot ($14 for 'three lines, three days' here in Sacramento, CA ). eBay fees are peanuts considering the worldwide exposure you get, usually a week's worth, and you can place a minimum (reserve) price you're willing to accept. If no sale, you can re-list it. You can also specify 'as is, no returns' - when it sells, you're done :) You deal with the mailing chores after the sale of course. For a small fee at Sneezy's classifieds (donation at your discretion) you also get worldwide exposure to clarinet specific buyers and I don't think there's a time limit. Same mailing thing after the sale, but you're more likely to give a 'return if not satisfied' (less postage). That, to me, seems like the most laid back way to go though, if you're not in a hurry. I'd give Sneezy's classifieds a try first if it were me.

Also realize that the beginning of a school year is the hottest selling time for an E-12. Lots of kids needing clarinets . . .

I highly recommend using the Sneezy classifieds. The E-12 is a great instrument and will sell quickly if it is in good condition. I would also list it on eBay--very inexpensive (as mentioned above) and excellent advertising. But, I recommend having photos of the instrument to download into the eBay page so people can see what they're bidding on. I've had lots of experience with selling this way and have had very few bad experiences with selling on eBay. I've never had a bad experience with anyone who bought off the Sneezy board.

I have had very poor response from the Sneezy classifieds (sorry, Mark!). Probably my complete lack of marketing skills, rather than the fault of Sneezy. I've had much better luck selling on eBay and advertising on the NetInstruments site on the Internet.

Has anybody else found the insertion of photos in EBay ads to be a Godawful hassle?

I have had major problems uploading photos to place in eBay ads, but I think the problem is on my end (local Internet server and/or firewall), not on eBay's end. But it's hard to tell. Lately I've had to resort to only placing one small, low-resolution photo on my ads, and even that take many minutes to upload and frequently the link 'crashes' in the meantime. Very frustrating.
