 Rose Etudes???
Author: anna

When did you start studying these?

What were you studying before you studies these?can you recommend some etude books to prepeare for the rose?

Do you think that some people are possibly starting them too early when they're not ready yet?

is it common for high schoolers to study them or is it more of a college thing?

thanks

Anna,
From my experience, Rose is essential. I studied some in high school... but they are essential to be able to play well. That's my advice... I'd say it is never too early to start studying them.

See Hite site. Yes, he says Rose is for advanced players not for beginners though essential to learn artistic expression. He proposes a few etudes students should play before Rose.(Hite site is in Sponcer's page.)

My students always go through the entire Rose 40, before beginning an in-depth study and mastery of the Rose 32.

One should be proficient in both books, as their studies and etudes are invaluable building blocks which will influence your playing forever...GBK

Anna and GBK:
I've been told the same thing regarding the Rose 40 and Rose 32. I've done all the Rose 40 and am now almost halfway through Rose 32.

Anna...I just completed my 30th year teaching high school music in the public schools - and just retired. Now, I still teach privately and perform professionally...GBK

I'm a junior in high school and I'm three quarters of the way through the Rose 40 (I haven't done the 32 yet). I worked on Book 1 of the Hite Melodious and Progressive Studies before Rose. If you can play the final Baermann etudes in that book, you can do Rose. Some are harder than others, but not all are too difficult. I expect to do all of the 40 again in college, but they're really helping my technique now. They're really fun, too!

Rose 40 Exercise, and Rose 32 Etudes. The titles of the book denote their purposes.
Before Rose 40/32 to start to learn in Level 4, Demnitz, Barret, and Baerman 24 molodic studies are recommended by Hite in precedent levels,Level 1,2,3.
Cavalini is more difficult technically. I think these recommendations are reasonable.

By the way, if you study Rose 32, it may be clever to learn odd numbers first, and even numbers next. ( Odd numbers etudes are generally slower and even numbers faster.) If we learn them from the first to the last sequentially, most provably later numbers practice wil be more scarce than earlier ones. Some time, it may take much time to reach the last etude. This is true of practicing a solo piece. Most amateurs play earlier part more fluent than the later part, which shows that obviously practice time is not reasonably spent.
