 Gigliotti mouthpieces
Author: Veronica

I'm going to get a Gigiliotti mouthpiece and I wanted to know if anyone had some experience with them, especially the different tip openings. I play an R-13, vanduran 3 reeds. I have been using a Hite Premiere mouthpiece since 9th grade and over the past year or so I have a tendancy to squeeze the reed shut (squeek). I play mostly classical. Any advice? What should I be listening for when I test the different facings?

my experience is that these (Gigliotti) mouthpieces sound better to the listener than to the player. I know that is a pretty broad statement.... Your embouchure problems are going to manifest themselves on any mouthpiece facing once you get used to it, even though at first you may find one suits you more than another. Probably the P-34 or the 3 would be mouthpieces you could easily adjust to (the P-34 is a bit closer (similar to 5RV?) , the 3 is pretty much a "medium" mouthpiece close to the Vandoren 5RVLyre, as far as i know).
when you try out the different mouthpieces test a couple of things- play the notes F, G and C at different octaves sustained at FF (making sure to tounge them), then do the same thing at P and PP. This is one way to test the eveness of response. Then do the same thing starting PP and creschendo to FF, then start FF and dim to PP. There are many variations on these kind of tests..... for instance you can tounge 3 quavers (8th notes) tying the last one on to a sustained note.... then do that sostenuto or staccato etc
or- play the cadenza from Cappricio Espangol without creschendo, to see if some notes just pop out, or some won't easily come out.
The problem is that all of these type of tests also test how good a player you are- you might find that a mouthpiece will fix a problem you have been having, you might also find that the problem returns after you have played on that Mouthpiece for a while! it's a tricky business.
In general i expect that you'd find the G to make a bigger sound than the Hite Premier and you may initially find the tone unfocused and with much less brightness in the sound. I personally don't use the G (or at least any that i've owned/tried) but some good players i've heard or know do sound great on them. One friend has fabulous tone when playing solo but has great difficult projecting from within the orchestra and i'm convinced it's because of her G mouthpiece.... Only a few days ago i heard another friend (Assoc Principal of the APO) play on Vandoren, Bay, Miller, Zinner, Wurlitzer, Hite, Selmer, Mitchel Lurie, Pierne and Gigliotti and thought that he sounded best on G.
Good luck, i hope that this has been some help

They are pretty decent mouthpieces. I go to school were giggliotti use to teach before his passing. I was not a student of his but I can give a few comments from what I know . The P and P34 are pretty close facing mouthpieces. The students that go to my school and use those facings use pretty hard reeds (5 Vandoren V-12). I forget which one of the two I mentioned has a closer facing. I know Giggliotti preffered a much closer facing with a harder reed combination. I have played on a few and they seem to hold a good focused sound. They are worth trying out.
