 Buffet C13
Author: Susie

A local music store is selling a Buffet C 13 B flat Clarinet for about $300 less than an R13.
I've looked in the archives and there is some mention of them in a discussion in 1999 but that discussion also keeps referring to an Evette Schaeffer model as a C13...

Does anyone know about these Buffet C13's or know anything about them?
I do know that it is German made, grenadilla wood, with silver plated keys.... But how do they play and are there over-riding concerns about them?
thanks,
Susie

I tried out a [slightly used] C 13 at the Horn Trader's in OK City about a year or so ago. I felt it played quite well re: fingering and intonation, but didn't badly need another pro [semi-pro?] cl. It was priced between the Evettes [& Sch] and R 13's , $600 as I recall, didnt seem to need any TLC that I couldn't give it. I may have asked about it here! I did run onto a Buff ad in "The Clarinet" which appeared to place it just below the R 13 in that "pecking order". Susie, I'd suggest finding an R 13 player for his/hers evaluation, you might be able to negotiate a good price. Don

If it is the clarinet you want and you intend to keep it, that's OK. If you ever intend to sell or trade up, you will lose much more money on a C-13 than an R-13. Resale on intermediate horns isn't very good.

The R-13 is a better instrument than the C13, but the C13 would be excellent for an intermediate student player. I've play-tested several of these side-by-side with the R-13 and the R-13 is a more substantial instrument--both in weight of the wood and density of the sound. The C13 is not to be shunned as a "second class" instrument in any way--it's an excellent choice and usually is well-built. But, as Fred just mentioned, the resale value is not as good as the R-13 for the reason you mention--most people have never heard of it.

How does it compare to the E (-11, -12) clarinets? I also have never heard of it.
