Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for Adults

Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp offers a 4 day "band camp" for adults in the summer and I was wondering if anyone's gone to it. How was it, what is the level of playing, are there "beginners" (say, less than 5 years playing their instrument)? In general, I'd be interested in anyone's experiences there.

I'd love to go to some "band camp" for adults this summer but since I've only played a short time (less than a year and a half), I'm a little unsure.

Also, any suggestions for other adult band camps?

Try http://www.peacegarden.com/camps.html As a former camp instructor, I highly recommend this camp for it's variety and depth of activities and the literal fun the adult campers have learning about their instruments and performing music. There are also the social gatherings at night (after practice and performances) around the campground campfires and at the Klinic, just outside the Peace Garden grounds, where "attitude adjustment" is available for a slight extra fee. But you should be prepared to be musically envolved from "revelle" at 7:30 AM until after the nights concerts or rehearsals, usually aroung 10 PM. One of the best teaching experiances of my life, is a common phrase heard among the professional staffers. Check it out and Good Clarineting!!!!

Interlochen also has an adult chamber music camp in late August that I went to about 10 years ago (before my kids were born.) They had just started having a wind instructor there, which improved things a lot.

This might be a good opportunity if you can put together your own groups to read music at your level. The organized groups tend to lump people together regardless of playing level, which is great for beginners but less so for advanced players. The last year I went, we put together an absolutely wonderful group to read the Brahms Quintet and some other things, until they kicked us out of the practice rooms at 1AM!

The atmosphere is a plus. Camp food is a definite minus. You can stay in the camp or not. Interlochen State Park is right across the road; you may need reservations (may be available on-line.) There are some restaurants within relatively easy driving distance, but time may be an issue. Don't know how this compares to rules for band camp.

Eugene: Being from Calgary, the International Camp would be perfectly located for you as it is on the border of N. Dakota and "friendly" Manitoba in the International Peace Garden, a beautiful tribute to Canadian and US enduring friendship. I taught two full two-week sessions (orchestral and band) plus the adult camp at the end, and amid the "whirlwind" of teaching, daily classes schedules, clinics and concerts, I seem to remember it lasting about four days--like an extended weekend. This seemed to work out well with vacation and work schedules for most the adult "students." The average age of adults attending seemed to be in the 45-50 range, but my oldest was an adult beginner--former school teacher--well into her 80's (and playing 3d clarinet band literature!!!) She always came to her lessons with a list of written questions to ask and made certain that I fully explained every detail to her satifaction. Kind of similar to oral exams for "the grade." I also recall an entire community band of adults from Winnepeg that attended and presented a special concert--for which they all recieved 50% off of their camp tuition. They also were a fun bunch of "Canooks" (as I call my Canadians friends in our local Curling Club, which I belong to and enjoy when not playing clarinet, saxophone and flute. Check out the website--I am certain that you will enjoy!!!! Good Clarineting.
