How good is my ~35 y/o Evette & Schaeffer?
Author: Steve Epstein

Serial no. K14178. Or that last number may be a "6", not an "8", but I think it's an "8". I'v owned it since it was new; got it in jr. hs. I was reading the post further down about undercut toneholes. Does my horn have them? It does have a lot more resistance than student horns I've played. Also, like one of the respondents in that thread, I too turn heads when I warm up, and I'm an amateur also. Is the horn that good, or are they just looking to see where the noise came from?

Thanks for your replies.

Steve

Steve: HOW good is your Evette & Schaeffer clarinet??? VERY GOOD from the sounds of what you're getting out of it!!! (and from all those heads turning in a positive manner, I'm sure!!!) I've heard nothing but positive comments from so many people who own horns such as yours and/or hear people play on similar....most people simply assume they are hearing a good R-13. My advice is to hang on to that horn, even if you consider getting another someday; you won't be sorry, as it is a very-good quality horn made from great-quality vintage wood such as is nearly impossible to find today (and at premium price!!!) and that that way you'll always have a great back-up horn when you need one (and the day WILL come...!!!)

All I know is that they're equivalent to the current E13's.

Congratulations, it sounds to me like you are playing with very good tone quality, I had a similar experience years ago and I treasure it even yet. With a good mouthpiece and compatible reeds, a true cl'ist can produce real music with any horn. Its usually later when a pro cl is needed for precise intonation and fingering facility. I have supplied several Evettes for students and have been pleased with them, and with the students progress. Don
