 Leon Trotte restoration
Author: Bill
Date:   2001-11-13 15:55

My first (playable!) clarinet was a Leon Trotte (long since sold). Last year I got another one. I'm thinking this is the next one up for restoration. Any opinions/idle chatter? No one talks about these clarinets (few know about them). When I got the present Trotte (the "Trottus Presentus"), I was pleasantly surprised to find that it has more of the qualities of a truly fine instrument than I remembered from my first one. The little bit of playing I did on it---whoa!--nice tone. Bore (via highly scientific "pinkie feeler gauge" test) is narrower at botom of LH joint than 1938 Buffet but (of course) not so narrow as the modern R-13 (my narrowest-bore clarinet is an old Cundy-Bettoney-Buffet). Wood of Trotte is close-grained and shiny (like an older Paris Selmer), instrument relatively heavy in the hands. Anyone else ever play one of these? --Bill.
