Hey Justin, since you're from Australia you might know of some of the players in the top symphony orchestras around the country. I know Paul Dean, Brian Cathlove, Nick Murphy, Floyd Williams, Dianna Tolmie, Kate Travers - all from Queensland. From NSW - Francesco Celata, Laurence Dobell, Christopher Tingay. From Victoria - David Morris, Craig Hill....
There's heaps more.. go to a site http://www.orchestralclarinetist.com and it lists professional orchestra players around the world. Hope I helped and good luck with the project.

Justin -

I know Kalmen Opperman well. I've met and talked with Larry Combs a number of times -- enough that he remembers me when we meet. I studied with Alexander Williams (principal in the NBC Symphony under Toscanini) and Bernard Portnoy (Philadelphia Orchestra). I've at least met quite a few well known players, but I wouldn't say I know them.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw

I have the honor to be playing in a wind ensemble alongside Larry Bocaner, recently-retired bass clarinetist of the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington, D.C.)

Allow me to put in a plug for my teacher, Andre Patrick -- a student and former collaborator of Jacques Lancelot, a clarinet player for more than 50 years, a composer, a Frenchman to the tips of his moustache and a wonderful human being.

If your school project is for famous clarinetists throughout history, there have been many famous jazz clarinetists. Probably the best known are Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and Pete Fountain. Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw played big band swing music. Pete Fountain plays Dixieland/New Orleans jazz. Any of those guys would make for a good school report.

I knew Jimmy Dorsey, who was better known for playing alto saxophone. But he was excellent on the clarinet. He played an Albert-system instrument.

John

I had the wonderful opportunity to see Richard Stoltzman (with his wife Lucy on violin and pianist David Deveau) perform a program of Copland, Bernstein, Foss, and Bartok last Wednesday evening.

He's fantastic; his sound is very warm and full in person, and their ensemble is superb.

I have heard David Shifrin several times playing the Mozarts, WOW, heard Eddie Daniels play classics to jazz, GREAT, and with other cl'ists chatted after the concert, very enjoyable. Actually played in combos with Steve Wilkerson, years ago, and when he played cl, and wife Andrea Baker sang at our symp concert, he gave me credit for starting-interesting him on clar back then!! TKS, again, Steve. Don

Tale Ognenovski is the greatest clarinetist of all time, demonstrating unique skill, a wealth of invention, amazing improvisational virtuosity, and outstanding musical competence in all areas of music. Tale Ognenovski's numerous musical works belong to different genres; together, his folk dances and classical and jazz compositions established the clarinet as an instrument capable of the highest range of expression in solo music. He has appeared with Macedonian Ensemble of Folk Dances and Songs "Tanec" on the world's most prestigious concert stages in North America (New York City, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Toronto, Detroit, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston, New Orleans, Atlanta...) and Europe (Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Bonn, Munich, Wiesbaden, Dortmund, Paris, Toulon, Toulouse, Le Havre, Bourges, Grenoble, Lyon, Berne, Geneva...) with fantastic success. He has composed and arranged 150 Macedonian folk dances , one classical concert "Tale Ognenovski Concert for Clarinet No.1", and many Jazz compositions. Some of his compositions are recorded on one Audio CD, 11 LPs, 11 cassettes, 10 gramophone records, and one videotape (Independent Records, RTB, Jugoton, RTS and MRT ). The words "remarkable music on both orthodox and unorthodox instruments - a raucous and unforgettable pipe," written by John Martin, and appeared in The New York Times on January 28, 1956, are related to the Tale Ognenovski's performances in Carnegie Hall as reed pipe and clarinet soloist with the Macedonian ensemble of Folk Dances and Songs "Tanec" on January 27, 1956.
