 Christmas Music...Finzi or Ashmore?
Author: Brian Peterson
Date:   2001-11-01 14:33

I seem to recall hearing a piece by one of the above mentioned composers a couple of years ago. It was based on a Christmas carol that I cannot remember. Is there such a piece or am I imagining things?

Thanks!

Brian

Brian.....

My daughter played "Carol" from Finzi's Five Bagattelles for Christmas at our church last year. It was very well recieved.

Mike--

I've got the Bagatelles and have run through the "Carol" movement, but alas the solo part doesn't exactly "ring a bell" as it were. Can you recall if the piano accompaniment manages to bring out a more familiar melody? Thanks much.

Ashmore wrote a peice called "The Four Seasons" for clarinet and string quartet, and I believe the Winter section has some Christmas tunes in it. You will find the Finzi and Ashmore on a CD by Stoltzman that has a quartet arringement of the Finzi.

Brian,

There could well be such a piece... by both simultaneously. Ashmore orchestrated the Finzi bagatelles and this version has been recorded by both Stoltzman (RCA) and Plane (Naxos). Both are coupled with the Finzi Clarinet Concerto and both are, IMHO, first rate. Again, IMHO, the Naxos is a steal at its price. The RCA may not still be in print. The Finzi concerto is a personal favorite of mine and I think I have almost all of its recordings. For my money, Stoltzman heads the list.

Best regards,
jnk

Ashmore has a website.

I remember hearing some time ago that the music for his "Four Seasons" is only available as a rental.

Brian

There's a setting of "Greensleeves" by Ashmore...aka What Child is This. It's on the Stoltzman Finzi/Ashmore CD. It's a nice arrangement.

These pieces must not be commercially available. I've looked and looked for them without any luck. It's a shame really, because it sounds like such lovely and fun music to play.
