I have a dictionary that is very helpful. It is called POCKET MANUAL OF MUSICAL TERMS (5th Edition) and is made by Schrimer Printing.

Sorry, that other site is also very poor. I haven't seen a really good one oout there yet, and I've seen a bunch.
You really have to see the Pocket Music Dictionary, the Pocket Manual of Musical Terms along with the Sam Ash Music Dictionary to realize the difference.
It's way too long to explain, but Lisa, forget the webin this case and get the books. They are only a handful of dollars.

Peter...I have never been a big advocate of getting musical data from the internet. Having advanced degrees in Music History, I can verify the gross inaccuracies, misinformation and distortion that is out there. As anyone can put up a web page, it seems there are a lot of "internet scholars" out there.
Aside from the pocket dictionaries mentioned above, I suggest to my serious students to spend the $$ and purchase a copy of The Harvard Dictionary of Music(Apel).
The internet is a good tool for research, but it has to be used very carefully, and in conjunction with established and accepted primary sources....GBK

I was able to buy my Harvard Dictionary for 50 cents - at a library sale! Check all the libraries in your are for their sales. Reference books get updated, but the old ones are still useful! I just missed getting an old set of Groves for $25!

You know, those library sales sounds like a good idea. I'd have to make some calls and find out when one is taking place.
