I am a vito mouth piece and on the side "2V" is written, can someone tell me what that means? I took it to my band director and he thinks it is how much area there is between the reed and the mouthpiece. Please help me!

The Vito 2V is a MODEL or name of rthe mouthpiece. I have always assumed that it was made for Leblanc/Vito by another company such as Vandoren. Seems like someone once told me that the Vito 2V was a Vandoren 2RV, with the "R" dropped. I have never had ot seen confirmation of that though. The only thing that really matters is the way that your mouthpiece plays. best, mw

As mw said it is just a model name and has no particular meaning. However if you were to contact the maker and then ask them what characteristics this mouthpiece has, you would need to tell them what model so they could look it up.

Kyle --
Your band director may be on the right track because for most makes of mpce, the larger the number of the lay, the larger the "area" between the reed and the mpce!
We would say the larger number lay is "more open". Realize that there are no standards for mpce lays so that one maker's #2 facing has nothing to do with any other maker's #2 facing.
It has been a while since I last posted this info, so here it is again:
Once upon a time, the Vandoren mpces sold in the US as 2RV were the same as the Vandoren 5RV sold in France. The Vandoren lays for the French market began with much closer lays than those destined for the American market. At some point in time, Vandoren abandoned this silly practice and now uses the same numbering system for all of their mpces, so that a "French" 5RV and an "American" 5RV are now the same lay. But an older Vandoren 2RV should measure the same as the 5RV, unless it has worn or been refaced.
Based on those I have measured, if your Vito 2V mpce is gray in color and fairly recent, it is approximately the same lay as the Vandoren 5RV, although as I remember, the baffle on the Vito is not as deep as the 5RV, so that the 2V will sound somewhat brighter than the 5RV.
The Vito is a quite decent student mpce. If you are having trouble with it, either have a competent person check the facing for problems, or else keep the Vito as a spare and buy a good low priced aftermarket mpce. My favorite is the Hite Premiere which sells for about $30.
