I currently am using a Brilhart mouthpiece that I'm not too happy with. Would it be a good idea to invest in a Vandoren B45 as a replacement? Has anyone had any bad experiences with this particular brand and facing?

Last Saturday I changed my mouthpiece on a Leblanc L70 to a Vandoren B45 (dot), which is the same facing as regular B45 (chamber is slightly enlarged). However, the most important advice I can give you is "try before you buy!" I spent several hours at a local music shop trying out everthing they had until I settled on "the dot". Mouthpieces are very personal and only you can select what's best.

If you have a tuner, or have access to one, check out how well in tune your clarinet is with the various mouthpieces.. I have several mouthpieces that I use, one being a B45. I have found that my horn is not as well in tune with the B45 as it is with my Mitchell Lurie Premium, which I generally use. The B45 is somewhat easier to blow and is capable of greater volume. Therefore, in some situations it is preferable in spite of some notes being slightly out of tune.

Also remember to keep your reed strength and brand in mind when selecting a mouthpiece-try to pick one that matches your current setup.
