For those of you like me that stink at jazz improvisation, here is a trick you can use to get started. Learn the concert C blues scale. That translates into the D blues scale on the Bb clarinet. D F G G# A C D.
It's easy to learn, the fingerings are easy across the whole range of the instrument, and most importantly, the C blues scale has the unusual virtue of sounding good against music written in any key.
You're limited with what you can do with it, but it's a whole lot better than having no arsenal whatsoever. Try it.
