Is anyone on out there intersted in improvisation? How about Bulgarian and Gypsey music? Klezmer? Western European folk music?
There are many new and exciting things happening in clarinetville that you rarely hear about from schools or magazines. Players like: Ben Goldberg, Chris Speed, Ivo Papasov, Johnny Dodds, Vinnie Golia, Matt Dariou, Francois Houle, Neftule Brandenwein- I've heard all these guys on records and love their playing but can't find enough about them on the web. If you aren't farmiliar with these artists, you are missing out! If you know good records to check out, or interesting stuff about these guys, tell me.
Someone buy a record by one of these guys so we can talk about it. Chris Speed can be heard on records by Pachora (Knitting Factory Records) and Bloodcount (the greatest band in the world! on Screwgun Records) and he has 2 solo records. Ben Goldberg (my clarinet hero) has several records out, check out New Klezmer Trio (Tzadik) or everything else. When I was in high school all I ever heard was Eddie Daniels, while he played flawlessly, he didn't touch me emotionaly at all-especialy being a 17 year old boy, I needed something else. In college I heard Don Byron and thanked God for it. Once I heard these other guys I was on a whole new trip. I realized that I could attempt something new and personal with the clarinet. And these names are just a few.
I flipped out when I heard Eric P. Mandat play at the Clarfest in Chicago. I also heard Harry Sparnay (Sp.?) and Michael Lowenstern there- those guys had it going on!
So check it-someone-ANYONE OUT THERE- tell me about what's going on in your minds and hearts and coming through on YOUR HORN. -Stuart
