I have two one-piece Buffet clarinets. The B flat is serial #591H1(i.e. 1913) and the A is #1T264 (1926). Both bells are imprinted with a "Carl Fischer, New York" logo. I contacted Carl Fischer, the music publishing company, and they confirmed that they once sold instruments, but they knew nothing more about these. Are these simply "store brands" or did Buffet make a custom clarinet for Carl Fischer? I am deeply impressed with the wealth of knowledge on this BB, so I am sure someone can enlighten me.

At one time, only Carl Fischer in New York could import Buffet clarinets. Buffets brought into the U.S. any other way were considered illegal and often had their serial numbers filed off. Because Fischer was the importer, their name appeared on the bell of the Buffet clarinet. While they were still the sole importer, Fischer did stop stamping their name on the instruments. I believe Fischer stopped being the only importer for Buffet sometime in the 70's. You might contact Boosey & Hawkes which is now the manufacturer and importer of Buffet clarinets. Dealers who sell Buffets legally in the U.S. must now go through B & H to obtain instruments.
