For the Berio does anyone have any good fingerings for the double stops/harmoinics on the sixth page: III) Ab and Bb in the throat register; IV) F# and A # in the throat register.
The fingerings listed are for a clarinet with a low Eb key (which I don't have). Would it perhaps be just as good to hum one of the notes while playing the other at the same time? Is this what most performers do?
Also, in the Corigliano Concerto's first movemement where there is a tremolo between Bb in the middle register and a low A (page 8 in solo part), would it be more effective to humm one of the notes (probably low A) while playing the other note with a standard fingering rather than attempting to change notes (and registers) very rapidly.

When Berio was asked about these multiphonics, at one point he said to BIll Wrzesien "Just play any multiphonics as long as they are multiphonics. This is so as so have the ultimate 20th century clarinet work." I love that response. Since this isn't exactly conducive to keeping the structure of the piece intact, Tom Martin suggested that he found a way on his clarinet to play one of the notes an octave higher. (Incidentally, when asked last summer for the Tanglewood performances of all of the Sequenzas whether or not they could be tremelo instead, Berio replied with a negative.) When I used Mr. Martin's fingerings, I found that all of them had to be changed on my clarinet, as he figured they might. Try fingering one of the notes up one octave and then allow the lower partial to come out (grunt). Experiment with adding and subtracting fingers until you shade the lower note to the needed pitch. This at least keeps the pitch content the same if not the registration. If you work at it, you can find a way to keep the voice leading.
Sorry about the round-about suggestion here. Your clarinet will be different than mine and I don't have my copy of the Sequenza with me right now.

When Antony Pay was performing the piece with Berio present years ago, he complained that the multiphonics didn't work on a conventional non Eb clarinet. With that Berio re wrote the multiphonics and made them playable. I will endevour to hunt out my old copy with these revisions made by the composer. They are something which we should all have access to.
