Hey All !
Quick question - For my college auditions, i'm suppose to have a major concerto and another work showing contrast.. I picked Mozart Clarinet Concerto for my major work and for my contrasting pieces, I have Witold Lutoslawski's Dance Preludes - Movement 1 and probably either 2 or 4 - which ever shows more contrast.. My questio ~ Is Dance Preludes too simple for a college auditon ? I got through Movement 1, pretty well sightreading.. It's not hard, but it's the accents and movemental contrast that makes it advanced - I dunno.. What exactally are they looking for ? Should I choose a more difficult work ? If so, what else do you suggest ? Help !!!
Laurie.

The requirement of two contrasting pieces is pretty standard on many college auditions. If you choose the Mozart, as many, many students undoubtedly will, I usually recommend that my students pick a 20th century work as a contrast. Many of my students have used the Poulenc Sonata as their modern piece. The Stravinsky 3 Pieces are also fine, however you should have an A clarinet to perform it correctly. Other possibilities could be the Messager Solo de Concours, Muczynski Time Pieces, Jeanjean Scherzo Brillante, Rossini Introduction,Theme and Variations, etc...
I would strongly advise that upon learning any new piece, always consult with your teacher to find the correct alternate fingerings, and listen to a good recording to get a general sense of the shape and scope of the work, and then MAKE THE PIECE YOUR OWN. Good Luck..

If you like the lutoslawski you could use the 3rd movement instead...

The Lutoslawski is a fine choice. Do not worry about it being too simple. I know many clarinet majors in college who choose to perform that in their recitals.

Laurie -
The Lutoslawski Dance Preludes are fine for your audition. Remember that they are dances, and do your best to get a dance "swing" into them.
You win a small point by pronouncing his name correctly. The second ell has a slash through it, which is a special Polish character pronounced with a "w" sound -- Loo-tuh-SWAF-ski.
Best regards.

I never play Mozart for auditions unless I am required to....because I can never play it as well as I want to, no matter how hard I try! The Lutoslawski is not too simple at all. Play it on a more advanced level
