Good question! Are there conservatories that have studios that specialize in the bass clarinet? The Paris Conservatory has a bass clarinet class, but I don't know if you audition for it on the bass clarinet. I'll ask. At any rate, a bass clarinetist is no longer considered a failed clarinetist.

I can't see any reason why not. But it probably depends on the conservatory. Why not contact them and ask?

Hello,
Most classical clarinet auditions expect B♭ or A clarinet for standard repertoire (Mozart Concerto, orchestral excerpts, etc.). Bass clarinet is usually not sufficient on its own unless the school specifically states otherwise.
Best Regard,
Rechard

If you are looking at schools in the US, Jeff Anderle is working to establish a bass clarinet performance degree at Arizona State University. He is a phenomenal player and a highly effective teacher—regardless of the degree availability, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone teaching anywhere with a more comprehensive understanding of the bass clarinet.

622: Plus, Arizona State University has a really good music program and a great concert hall.

But, I think that in most situations there would be an expectation to play some Bb clarinet. Unless one was going to be a soloist and carve their own path, most any bass clarinet playing positions in orchestras or pits would require Bb playing as well.

I don't know all, but there are at least some music departments specific to classical bass clarinet. I know there's a place in Spain (I think Barcelona but not sure) and in The Netherlands too (I think two places, not sure). I imagine other countries too.
I studied in something called a multidisciplanry department (so not strictly classical) and planned to play both clarinet and bass clarinet, but the university itself actually wanted me to focus on bass because it's more unique, etc. So even though it wasn't meant to be specific to bass clarinet in advance, that's what it ended up being (I played 90% bass clarinet).
