 Barrel for B&H eefer
Author: Claribob

I would like a backun cutback barrel for my B&H Imperial eb clarinet. This is partly to mitigate the shortened tenon socket on the supplied barrel which is too short for any modern mouthpiece I've tried. Does anyone know whether I need the selmer fit or the buffet fit? I was told by a stockist it would be the buffet fit however I believe the Imperial was based on a Selmer design. I don't live anywhere near a stockist so can't easily try before buying. Any thoughts?

Measure the top tenon on your e flat clarinet and let us know what it measures. That's a start figuring out what will fit your instrument.

You can contact the store and ask if they would allow you to return. If yes, you can buy both.

Perhaps, Chris P. would be able to give a good advice.

The tenon of the top joint is 15mm with corresponding socket at the bottom of the barrel. However the socket in the top of the barrel is only 14mm and the tenon of my Selmer mp is 15mm. The instrument came with a 'sawn off' Peter Eton mp which fits snuggly but the cork keeps fraying as it now sits right to the end of the tenon (as well as this mp not suiting me anyway). The 1mm gap doesn't affect the tuning but if I'm investing in a new barrel I want it to be just right.

I forgot to measure the barrel the W&W Eb clarinet had, but that too had a sawn off and shortened Peter Eaton mouthpiece with it and the tenon cork was right at the leading edge of the tenon (a tenon ring could always be fitted if need be).

I tried it with my Pomarico crystal and the tenon on that was around 1mm longer than the socket. The diameter of the mouthpiece socket on it was the same as a regular Eb barrel, so I had no trouble using my own mouthpiece to play test it.

I can always ask the owner what length the barrel is, although I don't know if he has a set of verniers which would give the most accurate measurement.

I have a B&H Eflat in plastic... I bought it in a terrible state (replaced tone holes of the wrong size, a big crack...) However, it was only £35 and I used it to practise my glueing and filing, so it's now OK for my purposes.
It came with a 45mm barrel and I needed a shorter one to get up to pitch. I bought a Chinese 40mm barrel from ebay for £8. I did have to do a little reaming out of the sockets, but it fits Yamaha 4C and 5C mouthpieces - the tenon depth is OK.
** I don't recommend any of this for a serious player with an instrument that is worth something!!

IMO the gaps on an Eb tenon can have a marked effect on the tuning. Whatever you buy you may wish to consider spacers. My experience it that the tenon length. Can be an issue. Leblanc is shorter than buffet etc. B&H????
My understanding is that the Selmer is a larger bore than the buffet barrel. Clearly the Selmer Backun barrels are longer. At a guess the B&H is med +can you measure the bore. I have found that Backun provides not great info.
I can measure the bore on mine if you need?
Most of the above is assumptions feel free....
