I was reading about the prestige R13 and it's says you need to put a little more air in for the lack of vibration the better wood has ,why would this be true? why should better wood vibrate less than lower quality wood?

If I understand it correctly, the prestige wood is much more dense than the other high quality wood used because it comes from more of the core of the mpingo tree. The wood is dense and when things are more dense, it needs "more" to make it vibrate. When it does, it's AWESOME! I have a Buffet Festival and it's made with the EXACT same quality wood as the Prestige R-13 and I need a little more air, but the effect and tone is great. I hope this helps, and I hope I'm somewhat right! :}

Hum! so many things here...
The wood does not really vibrate. The reason the Prestige and Festival behave the way they do is because they are designed this way. These horns are targetted at accomplished clarinetists. They resit more yes, but in the end of people with proper muscilar development, this resistence is actually better since it allows our muscles to operate better. A little bit of resistence is not futile if this resistence is well match to our muscle power.
Rossi's actually have an ABS plastic sleave inserted in the top hald of the bore (where the top joint is on clarinets with two parts). Tone holes are also lined with ABS plastic. Mr. Rossi told me once that these design decisions were made to prevent Rossi's from cracking (he never had one cracking he said), and to create a perfectly polished upper bore where surface imperfection and lack of mechanical stability have the greatest impact.
Yes, folks! The sublime Rossi is actually half plastic... So much for the Prestige wood coming from the core - neat marketing trick mind you...
Horns sound the way they do mostly because of the way they are designed and build. The actual material chosen is much less important. We use dense wood because they do not wrap, not because they sound better. Boxwood for instance produces amazing horns, but wrap too much for modern instruments with lot of hardware on them. Rumor has it that Stoltzman uses boxwood barrels and have them tweaked constantly.

I've owned both the Presige and the Festival. The Prestige was a bit harder to blow through than the Festival and I like the Festival better in every way--sound, intonation, etc. Of course, some of these reasons may be just the individual instrument. With everything, you have to try the individual instrument before making a judgement--but the advertiser's description can give you a starting place.
Yes, the Prestige is designed for the advanced player--with the extra Eb-Ab key and the greater "resistance" with blowing. So, you might save your money and just get an R-13 for now and wait until you really want to spend the extra money for the Prestige or Festival.
I can't answer the question about the wood. The wood in my Prestige was prettier than the wood in my R-13. But, the wood in my Festival is the prettiest of any clarinet I've ever owned. I know that says nothing about "core" or "density," but, heh--I'm no expert on that stuff.

Hey heard of the Festival Model but how come the International musical Suppliers,WWandBW, and all other retailers don't sell them? why isn't it in Buffet's clarinet catalog? this seems like a good horn as well?

I DO know about that last question. The Festival is only sold to those who "walk-in" for it. The woodwind and brasswind DO sell them, but they're under contract with Buffet to only quote the price to those who walk in and ask for them. Even our local Anaheim band cannot sell the Festivals online, even though they currently have about 10 in stock.
The Festival may not be in the catalog, but it is on the website at <www.boosey.com>

If you've been to their website then you've obviously seen the Festival in the catalog. Which catalog is it missing from? I have a printed catalog from a couple of years ago where it's listed.

My understanding from my friend who owns a Buffet dealershipl, is that Buffet doesn't offer this model through mail order, or discount music catalogues. So, you won't be able to purchase it online. As stated earlier, you have to "walk in" to get one. I had to "walk in" to a lot of stores before I found the right one--and then purchased it on the spot because it was excellent.
