 fraudulent clarinet supply site

Hi,

I wondered if I could let you know about a clarinet supply site online that I have used that seemed to be fraudulent, just to avoid others finding out the hard way?

I'm reconditioning an old bass clarinet, and I just tried to buy bass clarinet pads from this online shop:

https://www.ferneaic.shop/product/b32-21-35-5mm-alto-bass-clarinet-bassoon-tan-kid-leather-pads-online/

When the payment page came up, it gave no indication of what the
delivery charge would be. Then when I tried to pay, my bank wrote and
said that it was a fraudulent transaction. The bank has stopped the
transaction and cancelled my credit card, and I've to wait for two
weeks for another one to come in the post.

I looked at the site in more detail and the page I was buying from seems to be a screen-scrape from the legitimate clarinet supply shop https://www.ferreestoolsinc.com/. I think they must be just copying stuff from other websites and trying to capture people's credit card details.

When I look deeper, ferneaic.shop is not a specialist shop and has items from all different areas of retail.

I just wondered if I could mention, so others can avoid finding out the hard way?

Separately, I'm finding that clarinet pads seem to be in really short supply, with many shops out of stock of a lot of sizes. No idea why, but it does drive people into the hands of these dodgy sellers. I'm starting to take careful note of which are the decent suppliers.

Legere Bb clarinet European Cut #2.5, Vandoren Optimum German Lig.

Hi Jen,

Great to hear you're getting a bass clarinet sorted out. It will no doubt take a lot of very dedicated fiddling about, but I'm sure you'll love it and fill the household with warm and mellow tones. Glad also that you didn't get scammed. Fraud online seems to be pretty rife these days and skilled at looking legit.

As for the pads you might well do best to get them through your local music shop as they will no doubt be able to get their hands on good quality and the right size and fit and all that. If you're set on doing the re-padding yourself they may well be helpful rather than scornful about the idea ( but perhaps I speak for myself).

What bass do you have if you don't mind me asking ?

Hi Jen,

I tried the link out of curiosity. Norton blocked access and reported it to be a malicious site, which confirms your suspicion.

Regards,
Hans

The whois for that domain is incredibly sparse. Only the registrant name & country - nothing else filled in. Supposedly from Myanmar. Against ICANN rules but whatcha gonna do?

Registrant Contact

Name - Wilayah Persekutuan
Organization
Street
City
State/Province
Postal/Zip Code
Country
MY
Phone
Fax
Email

I wrote to the ISP that supports this domain saying it was missing required information, but I don't have high hopes.

Good news! I got a response from the ISP and that domain is now shut down. I'm sure it will pop up again on a different domain, but score 1 for the good guys today.

FYI - in most cases you can't just shut down a domain. In this case the domain owner did not supply the necessary items for giving them the name - they violated ICANN rules which put the ISP in jeopardy of losing their ability to hand out domain names. I didn't threaten, just pointed out that the domain was outside the ICANN rules for identification. The ICAQNN takes domain ownership rules very seriously (ICANN = Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. They are the official body that allows domains to be associated with IP numbers. A really good link to see what they do is at https://www.icann.org/en/beginners - the more you know, the better the world could be)

Excellent work! Thanks too for the icann link which I will aim to deploy should I run into something similar.
