I've come across some pictures of a Martienne clarinet which has metal attachments to the upper joint keys (please see attached photos) -something that I've not seen before. Can anybody please explain their purpose?

German system clarinet. They use small vents off the sides of the main tone holes to fine tune pitch.

Thanks, Paul! Do all German-system clarinets have them?

I'm ignorant, I freely admit it. Why do German-system clarinets need these (or benefit from them), but "French" clarinets don't?

Yes

to fine tune pitch

Boehm created his keying system to simplify everything. I think getting rid of the low E and Low F vent mechanism was a bad idea........we could still use it!
