Just noticed as I go through various reeds to find something I like, that some are longer than others. What's the reasoning for this?

The important length is the vamp (from the reed tip to the beginning of the bark where it has been cut away). Are you noticing different vamp lengths or is the part with bark still on it longer?

Vamp, etc. are standard, just the bark section shorter. Seems kind of weird. The reeds were purchased new so it's not consumer cutting it down. The V12s are really short.

From the photo, it doesn't look like they are all Bb clarinet reeds.
All my Bb Vandoren clarinet reeds (Traditional, 56, V21, V12) are the exact same length.
The Vandoren reed cutters all have the same distance from the base of the reed to the cutting part. In fact, the V21s and 56 share the very same RT50 reed cutter.

Well prigault, maybe the V12 is an Eb reed. 2 of them were in the case of a clarinet I bought which is a Bb....

Check out the Legere European Signature reed. It's both shorter and wider than your standard cane reed -- modeled, I believe, after a soprano saxophone reed. And it's arguably the best synthetic clarinet reed on the market.
