I'm sure this topic's been discussed on here before, but does anyone know of any recordings of Prof. Gilad's playing? Looked everywhere but nothing to be found. One of my friends attended a masterclass of his recently and heard him play, so he must still be active.

You should contact Gilad directly for information about his recordings.
As a conductor of the Colburn Orchestra he has recorded with mezzo-soprano
Susan Cooke, "If You Love for Beauty," and Violist Paul Coletti (the Chihara Viola Concerto). As a performer he was a member of an ensemble that recorded Deon Nielsen Price's Cartoonland Song Cycle. This was on Cambria CD-1122, recorded in 2000. I don't know if there is much solo work by him on this recording. The title of the whole CD was Sun Rays II. You can probably order it from Culver Crest Publications in Culver City, California (318) 838-4465. The performers listed on the CD are Zachery Valenzeuk, flute; Peter Mandell, bassoon; Berkeley Price, clarinet; Mary Heyler, voice; Deborah Kavash, voice; Yehud Gildad, clarinet.
I am not aware of any solo clarinet recording by him, but--again--you should contact him directly.

I have heard it said that "he can't play the clarinet" by more than one well known performer but his great success as a teacher is really an important contribution not to be sniffed at. I personally have no opinion on his playing, and imagine he could teach me a thing or two.

Yehuda Gilad's recording of the major work I composed for him in the late 1970's was released on SunRays II, (Cambria CD 1122). This CD is available at Cambria Recordings and at Culvercrest.com and elsewhere online. However, NAXOSDirect, the distributor, has screwed its upload to many other web sites. I have not yet been able to correct the mistake that tracks listed for SunRays II on Youtube, Spotify, and many other sites are actually Gregorian chant, NOT tracks from SunRays II.
I just tried amazon and successfully listened to excerpts from the three movements of Affects: Amazon.com Deon Nielsen Price Affects
FYI: Affects is one of my clarinet works that was the subject of a doctoral dissertation by Anna Roach. You can check the catalog of my works for clarinet at culvercrest.com. (New web site is in preparation.)
Please let me know if you are successful listening to YG on SunRays II. I think you will agree Yehuda is a great clarinet artist.

Affects is my 14 minute work for clarinet and piano with a wide variety of Romantic and Contemporary textures including extended technique and quarter tones. Recorded on SunRays II (Cambria CD 1122). See earlier post.

Student of Prof. Gilad here — in addition to his recording of Deon Nielsen Price's "Affects" as stated above, I believe there is a recording of him performing with the Yoav Chamber Ensemble, under the Orion record label. I haven't actually heard it, and I've only seen it listed online as a vinyl record. I've thought about purchasing it and finding someone to convert it from vinyl to digital. Afaik he does not perform anymore, and even in lessons I very rarely hear him play (usually only for a moment to check a mouthpiece or whatnot). Doesn't stop him from being a brilliant teacher!
Edit: this inspired me to go buy one of the copies listed online — will see if it's in good condition!

HERE'S YEHUDA GILAD PERFORMING Deon Price's "Affects: A Santa Barbara Rhapsody.""https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Affects+a+Santa+Barbara+Rhapsody+Y+Gilad.
Note: Dr. Price says in a later posting that the wrong title was given on YouTube. Mr. Gilad is actually playing "Affects: Reflections on the Pacific." .
Another known recording by Gilad, The Orion ORS 80388 vinyl LP, features him in 6 pieces for clarinet and voice: Pierre Gavenu "Polacca," Gordon Jacobs "3 Songs," Byron Adams "Nightingales," Meyerbeer "Hirtenlied," Schubert "Romanze" and Morten Lauridsen "Be Still My Soul, Be Still."
Thanks to Dr. Price and Max for the updates.

Thank you, seabreeze, for the correct link to Yehuda Glilad's recording of Affects.
However, NAXOS has the wrong title here. On the SunRays II recording, Yehuda is playing Affects: Reflections on the Pacific.
The later version is called Affects: A Santa Barbara Rhapsody, and is recorded on the first CD, SunRays (Cambria CD-1056) by clarinetist Michael Arnold and pianist Ayke Agus. You might enjoy the livelier motion in Affects: A Santa Barbara Rhapsody.
Sorry for the confusion of the titles and reversed order of the recordings. SunRays was the first CD recording of my music. After it was released we obtained the master of the earlier 1984 LP recording that included Yehuda's playing. Therefore, Tracks 20 - 31 on SunRays II are a re-release of the 1984 LP on TownHall Records, "A Composers' View: Music by Deon Nielsen Price".
Clear now!?
