Hey all! I was recommended this forum by the wonderful people at Sax on the Web- I'm receiving my fancy new upgraded clarinet (went from an old resin clarinet to a Yamaha SE series) sometime this week or early next week and wanted to see if you had any recommendations- I'm a saxophonist that plays clarinet in a Klezmer group, but I don't have any formal clarinet training. Was wondering what everyone recommended for method books- I have the Klose, which I got for next to nothing, but any other suggestions are great.
Thank you!

The Klose is a great book. If you take the time to really go though that book you will be well on your way.
Some other things to explore
Kroepsch studies
Jean Jean Vade Mecum
Rose studies
Rose etudes
That should give you a great foundation, but I always suggest finding a teacher on clarinet who can help you explore all the right techniques, fingerings, etc. Often I hear sax players who want to approach it like a sax and then struggle really getting comfortable
(no offense to sax players. I have heard the other way around as well)

That's a very fair assumption- I studied a bit of clarinet in college, but I'll be honest and say that my reading comprehension when it comes to music has always been my downfall- I played mostly by ear throughout my undergrad studies. I'll take a look for those method books! Thank you.

A friend of mine who's first a flautist but seasoned pro on sax as well (bassoon also...) said my book has been of help on clarinet, though she plays the stuff slowly.
You can't go wrong with the basic books-- Like you said, Klose. Also the Rose, maybe the Baerman books. Kroepsch has some studies that vary in difficulty. Another good book I studied back in H.S. was by James Collis. Anything with your basic scales, arpeggios. Later there are the contempory advanced books like Jettel, Zitek. Kell & Opperman have some good in between level stuff.
