Next year I will be auditioning for college. The schools that I am auditioning at do not have a required piece, but it just has to be at the Class "A" Level, going by Ohio's standards. I have already played the Brahms F Minor, the Mozart, and the Weber Concertino, so I don't know what to play next. At first I was thinking Poulenc, but now I don't know if that would be right for a college audition. So after putting the Poulenc out of my mind, I got to thinking of the 1st mvt. of the 2nd Weber Concerto. I really like this piece, and I like the fact that it showcases the clarinet's full range(well, I know that you can go higher than that high Bb, but its close to the top). But I am still open to suggestions. Does anyone have any ideas of what I should do next? Or Maybe do you like my current ideas?
Thanks,
Jeff

oh..so many pieces to choose from..among the many "standards" of the repertoire you might look at the Debussy Premiere Rhapsody/ Spohr #1 or #2/ Stavinsky 3 pieces..and the list goes on and on..Good Luck!!!

whats wrong with the Poulenc? Its really cool. However the Weber is great too, and if you really want to show the Clarinets versatality, (sorry, spelling), play all three stravinsky pieces. Do you have a time limit; that cuts out a lot of things, is it aloud to be accompanied...I think we need some more info here.

The Weber 2 is alright, as much as I don't like it. There's nothing wrong with Poulenc, it's quite a showy piece. I personally would steer clear of the Debussy until you are about 2 or maybe 3 years older. For my university audition I did the 1st movement of Weber 1 from memory, 2nd movement of Poulenc, and a movement of the Saint Saens Sonata, I can't remember which one.
If you can handle it, the final movement of Weber 2 would be very impressive, but you might have to work at the last page.

You need to do what you feel you have an affinity for, something that you know you can make come alive.
Sounds like you really like that first mvt of the Weber #2. If you like it that much, then it is worth pursuing. Learn it and learn it well. Do it!!!
Good luck on your journey.

No, there is no time limit, and it does not have to be accompanied...so I'm pretty much free to do whatever I want. But, just because there isn't a time limit isn't to say that the auditioner will want to hear me play some extremely long piece either. I would like to stay under 10 or 11 minutes I would say.
Thanks for the help!
Jeff
