 Is this a clarinet?

Attachment:  Is it a clarinet.jpg (602k)

A previous thread http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=477779&t=477750 discussed the saxonette and the octavin.

The attached photo is similar to the octavin http://bit.ly/2VpIhEA but the bell is in the wrong place. Any idea what it is? The picture is from the Ancient Musical Instruments Museum, part of the Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna.
The display case didn't have a label.

Yes, it is a member of the clarinet family known as the basset horn. Basset horns are pitched an F a 4th below the Bb clarinet and have a range to low C. This instrument has the extension bent back like a bassoon boot joint to make it more compact, however modern instruments look more like an alto clarinet:

In our home we have near 100 clarinet from different eras (including a Bass clarinet made by Oskar Oehler), and sadly there is not time to play many of them on a regular basis. If I owned THAT however I'd make a point of playing it EVERY DARN DAY!!!! Very cool.

"In our home we have near 100 clarinet from different eras"

Wow, Donald. I thought I was getting a bit obsessive and excessive with 26!;)

Let me add that Bassett horns are also made/pitched in A as well.
