Well, heard that they are very expensive and difficult to play. Do you intend to own one?

Little tiny suckers. Even the Eb sopranino is too small for my hands.

Hello,

did you view the 3 key high G clarinet ("Kinderklarinette C1") by Guntram Wolf. There is a fingering chart at the WFG on this machine. Playing in the chalumeau register (you'll need a lot of cross fingerings for the chromatic scale) is nice (even transposing a part in C sightreading).

Arnold (the basset hornist)

While on tour with our college Concert Band (back in the "days when people lived in trees"--inside joke for my fellow alumni), I playd a solo on the Ab clarinet during a segment which we called, "Showing Off Before Company." My "show off" was to play the Clarinet Polka immediantly after our contra-bass clarinetist did his Teddy Bears Picnic bit. Another "show off" was for our bari sax player, after playing a solo on the bass sax, to pull a sopranino sax out of it's bell and perform Oodls Of Noodles. We did play legit music on our concerts--one of our featured numbers was a transcription of the Pines of Rome--but these comic pieces were often the "hits" of the concert. The Ab clarinet is extremely small and a lot of fun to play, but as far a being "practical," not much "main-stream" band music being written and published today uses it--most special clarinet or woodwind ensembles. I do wish that I had one, however, just to carry around and have fun with, if nothing else. If anyone has one for sale, I'm Interested!!!!!! Good Clarineting!

I've tried several Ab clarinets over the years, but have never been able to squeeze my fingers tight enough together to play one. There are no parts for them except in a few Italian band arrangements. Baines (Woodwind Instruments and Their History) says that most of them are made with simple system keywork because Boehm keywork doesn't leave enough room to finger them. However, all the ones I've seen have been Boehm system. A new Leblanc was on eBay a couple of times last year, but they wanted too much for it.

A nice stunt for people with super-slim fingers, but I'm a contra man myself. ;-).
