 Which teacher?
Author: Kat

I need your guys opinion. I am switching to a different teacher and there was 2
I had in mind, but don't know which one to choose. One of them I'm afraid is going to be to strict and push me too hard, but the other one may not push me hard enough. There isn't any other teachers I am interested in. The one that is strict is the principal clarinetist of the Buffalo Philharmonic. The other one sits second chair in the Philharmonic, but is also the Eb clarinetist. Thanks!!!!!!!

Take a lesson from each of them and then decide. I would rather be pushed too hard than not hard enough. I am sorry though, but I know neither of them. So I cannot recommend one of them. I encourage you to just take a lesson from each of them. Find out what materials they use. Remember though, the best player may not be the best teacher. How about their other students? Do they play well or do they struggle their way through a simple piece. Also, see if the person is teaching only for a paycheck, or if he or she is teaching also for the love of teaching. I have probably left something out in my rush to write this, but I am sure others will have great input.

I too am in the middle of choosing a new teacher, and I also have two in mind that I am having a problem making a decision on. The best advice I have gotten from people, and the best advice that I can give is similar to Brandon's. I highly encourage you to have a trial lesson with each teacher. This lesson will give you an idea of how hard the teacher is going to make you work. This trial lesson will also give you an idea of how well you work together. Also at this lesson, I would suggest you have your possible teacher play clarinet for you! This is so you can tell if you like their concept of tone. This is important because you can see what they think a clarinet should sound like. If you don't like the teacher's concept of tone, you may not want to study with them. Good luck with your decision!

The issue is not whether one is too hard or not hard enough. The issue is whether which one can teach. Playing and teaching are two different skills. You need to choose the one who understands well how to transform you into a fine musician.
