 Evaluation/Repair

I have an old wood Pedler Eb clarinet that I purchased off Ebay over a year ago. It has been sitting. It has peculiar keys and tuning. ie: a throat Bb fingering sounds a B natural. It is not an Albert system clarinet.

I hope someone here knows who I might send this clarinet to for evaluation. I'd like to see if its worth putting any money into to make it play properly or if I should just cut my losses.

Thanks for your help!

While I am a huge fan of vintage instruments, an instrument with tuning issues is the last thing I would want to deal with. In addition to spending hundreds on a full overhaul, you may also need to pay for voicing and tuning, which can get expensive fast. It also sounds like you might need a longer barrel or even a different register tube.

Meanwhile, you can get a very decent wooden Eb from China for $500 (or $1000 for a Kessler if you want a warranty and a guarantee that it has been gone over before purchasing it).

Personally I wouldn't put the money into it unless you know it will be a great player. The only vintage Ebs I consider worth putting a significant amount of money into are Selmers and Buffets, as they have a very high resale value and generally fix up nicely.

I assume it's high pitch. Do you know about high pitch instruments? About 1920 and earlier. I think most people consider them not worth any investment.

The keys look at bit like Mazzeo system?

Nice looking Eefer you've got there. With the fork Eb/Bb mechanism, this is a cut above a typical Pedler.

Carefully examine the entire body in search of an HP or LP inscription. If you find an HP, the instrument won't tune to modern pitch. If you find an LP, the instrument could turn out to be useful.

I doubt it is a Mazzeo. I have a few and the throat tone key mechanism is seen in the attached photo. It is hard to see in the Eb photo whether there is a similar mechanism on it.
