I've just learned that it is possible to attend single sessions for $100 each and to audit sessions. To attend the entire 5-day clinic as a performing participant is $900.00.

Been playing on Jim's mouthpieces for years. He's got a couple of new models based on some newer blanks he's using that are awesome.
Definitely worth the $100 to hear the clinic and check out his work.

James Kanter's mouthpieces are highly sought after and sometimes sell used on that auction site we all know for as much as $1500. They are popular in Europe as well (especially Sweden) where some players hoard multiple copies, like old coins. Some of Kanter's more recent pieces appear to be based on new Chedeville blanks by Omar Henderson

I hear that the Kanter mouthpieces are quite popular in Northern Europe- a player I know in Sweden told me of principal clarinet players owning several and having spares kept in bank vaults etc. I'll get to try one in March, and look forward to it!

The Theodore Johnson TJ3 is a hybrid of the venerable Stowell, Wells,Snyder mouthpiece and the Frank (Cicero) Kasper 14.
I grew up walking distance from Frank Kasper's home in Cicero and watched him make mouthpieces. What a treat that was (wife was regularly complaining about his job - too much time for too little money, while the house regularly scented the aroma of delicious pork, dumplings and sauerkraut).
I have played all the Kasper's and Frank Wells made three custom's for me back in the day. The TJ3 beats em all.
And I got them all without paying an upfront charge for a clinic.

James Kanter used to sell his mouthpieces by direct mail order. He was a frequent advertiser in the pages of The Clarinet for many years and juggled his extremely busy career as a top movie studio clarinetist with the business of mouthpiece making. He stopped selling mouthpieces on the open market some years ago and has now retired also as a studio musician.
Evidently he has resumed making mouthpieces for professional clarinetists on a very limited basis. As I understand it, the $100 is to support the California clarinet organization that is sponsoring this interesting 5-day clinic that includes master classes with Michele Zukovsky, William Powell and other pro clarinetists. Kanter is not just setting up a table with his latest pieces; he is giving a detailed lecture on how he goes about making his own designs.
Some people might consider this giving away a few trade secrets and would gladly like to hear what he has to say and has learned from professional players all over the world (including Martin Frost) who use his mouthpieces and from his career as first chair clarinet in the Pacific Symphony Orchestra and soloist on many movie sound tracks.

So, did anyone attend this 5 day clinic. Or even just the James Kanter lecture. Any thing you can share would be appreciated.

Apologies for resurrecting this old thread - just wondering if anyone knows if James Kanter still makes mouthpieces? If so how could I contact him (please contact me privately)
