 Tonguing FollowUp

There is a 1999 topic 'Tounging' with a lengthy response from Ken Shaw.

In the response he suggested an embouchure exercise which was basically holding a mouthpiece in your mouth while driving/watching tv/etc. When trying to do this I am unable to hold it just with my embouchure at all.

Now, either my embouchure is 'weak' (very possible) or I'm missing something.

Can anyone clarify what this exercise is and what I may be missing?

Can you give us a URL for Ken's post? He's now deceased and can't repost here. What was this exercise meant to accomplish?

What happens when you try to hold the mouthpiece in your mouth? Are you just dropping it from fatigue in your embouchure? Is it sliding out because of the taper of the mouthpiece shape?

Since the post was 1999 ...

The exercise was to 'build embouchure muscles'. The description is clearer in the post.

I found it when looking for how to change a lifetime of anchor tonguing.

Mouthpiece exercise: Not dropping it from fatigue but from an inability to hold it tightly enough ... I don't think the taper is the thing. I'm using my old Ann Arbor Kaspar for this (with a pad on the top).

If there are other posts regarding this thing I would appreciate hearing about them.

I have the utmost respect for Ken Shaw, but I just tried this exercise and not only could I not do it with a reed on the mouthpiece for more than a few seconds, I did not see it as something I'd want to be able to do. WAY too much tension required and not in places that are helpful. Perhaps I'm not doing it right somehow?

One can certainly play with a professional sound with great endurance without clamping down on the mouthpiece like this. For me the embouchure should be firm, but not tight, but I'm not one of those guys who likes a set up that requires muscling the tone into focus. No strength 5 reeds for me.

In Los Angeles, driving while blowing on a mouthpiece is not a good idea.
