 German Schools for Study
Author: Coryglent

Hello everyone, I'm looking into studying overseas in Germany and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions worth looking into. I will be visiting a few cities in Germany come March 2018. Preferably looking for something with a Masters or Artists Diploma. Thank you in advance!

Lubeck - Sabine Meyer/Reiner Wehle
Berlin (UDK) - Francois Benda (also Basel and
Koln - Ralph Manno

More out of the way...
Trossingen - Chen Halevi

I'm sure there are more. I've taken lessons with the last three and not the first, although I've met more audition/competition winners who studied with either wehle or benda.

First choice is also Sabine. Very nice. One of her students was the amazing Julian Blizz. He also studied at the University of Indiana with Howard Klug who I know well and they all use Steuer reeds. Steuer reeds are kind of a household name for German players. She has her own Steuer reed design, S Meyer S800 reed line. Only recently did Steuer start making quality French reeds. During the last 5 years or so when the company moved from Germany to France. The only reeds they made were German reeds.

You've probably read about me saying that the American sound is kind of in a weird place. Everyone sounds the same. It's not the fault of American players. but the fault of companies throw stinky instruments at us. The German horns have this special warm sound to them. Well if you can study with Sabine I feel she has a phenomenal sound and you will learn a lot from her the longer you can study with her. Not just the sound, but understanding how to play really well.

If you can get in with Sabine you will be hearing one of the finest sounds and the very best players in the world. She was the very first lady to play in an all male Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. She's just one of the very best players ever. Wicked fast fingers, fast articulation, and a special person that will surely get the most out of your playing abilities. And she is nice! Speaks perfect English.

I hope you get to study with her! I wish I could put in a plug for you, but I don't know her that well.
