 Legere European cut with CL4
Author: luckyclar

I started to play after a long break and yet again getting frustrated with cane reeds.
I am thinking to try the new Legere European cut with my Vandoren CL4.

* Does the new Legere work well with CL4?
* Which strength would you recommend ? I was thinking to settle at 3 as my embouchure is weak and need to take a break after 30-40 mins of exercise.

Regards,

Don't know anything about a CL4. I normally play around a 3 equivalent to a Vandoren V-12 (fairly open and long facing) and bought a 3 European cut. To get it to where I'd play it for other people, I sanded it down a little, and sanded it to be narrower. Little hairs now come off the sides, but they don't seem to harm anything. I've now ordered a 2.75 and some German cuts to see if the work time can be decreased.

I am playing this combination (with Legere EC strength 3). It has a very nice sound (a bit warmer as with cane reeds). The responsiveness is slightly less than cane, but since the CL4 is very responsive, this does not hurt. The only issue I have is that the intonation is a bit low, especially in the upper register. So I can't use it for the orchestra (German orchestras usually play at 443 herz, even amateur ones). But it is a great reed for practice.

The strength 3 is comparable with Vandoren Rue Lepic 3 and is a bit too soft for me. If you use Blue Box strength 3 I whould suggest at least 3 1/4.

The Legere Signature European Cut reed doesn't fit in the cutout of the Masters ligature though as it is wider (and thinner) than V12's or the regular Signatures, so if you bought the kit you'll need to use a different ligature.

Thank you for your replies !

Michael: I ordered the 3, hopefully it'll work for me.

gwie: I do have the masters ligature but prefer using a BG leather ligature on CL4 as I enjoy the darker sound more.
