 Shortening down a barrel
Author: gwie
Date:   2017-01-04 11:10

Does anyone here have experience with shortening down a barrel and might be able to help me with the task? I have one at 65mm that I'd like to shorten to 55.5mm to use with my Yamaha CSG, but a manual lathe is not something I own or will likely own anytime in the near future. I'm happy to compensate you for your time!

Yamaha gets barrels in all of the time and they cut them to match your needs. They have a barrel maker that will discuss with you any issues you are having and figure out if it is the horn the barrel or a combination of both.

You live in Irvine. Call Yamaha and make an appointment. The sound room is incredible. They can adjust your horn and set you up with the correct barrel. You are only 15 minutes away from them! The guy doesn't come in very often, but it's worth the wait.

Thanks for the info! I really do need to visit the Atelier again sometime, it's been awhile. :)

No issues with my current setup actually, it works great with the (slightly modified) stock barrel. Both my CSG's had a complete overhaul by Wolfgang Lohff, who did the equivalent of miracle work on them. They play better than when I got them new!

I'm just curious how this barrel I have would perform on my CSG. It's made of hard rubber, and only offered in sizes down to 63mm. The maker has recommended to me to find someone with the appropriate hardware to reduce its length to 55.5mm, with the assurance that it won't hurt its primary characteristics.

I have some concerns about the statement that the primary characteristics of the barrel would remain the same.

On a typical 65 mm barrel, the upper tenon socket is about 17 mm, and the lower socket is approx. 19 mm. That leaves about 29 mm of actual "bore" in the mouthpiece. If you reduce the barrel down to 55.5, you are effectively reducing the bore from 29 mm to 21.5 mm, or a reduction of over 26%.

That in itself has got to change to response, as less of the total clarinet bore is hard rubber. Also, the bore of the barrel would have to be perfectly cylindrical for there not to be a big change in how it responds or tunes. It would also make a difference if you shortened the barrel from the top down, or the bottom up.

It would certainly make an interesting experiment!

Hi Walter, the maker of the barrel did explain in detail to me what shortening the barrel from the top vs. bottom and how much from each end would do to affect the way the barrel plays, and I am interested in the "experiment" of changing it see what the result is once it is shortened. I simply don't have the expertise myself and would like to find someone close by I could drive to visit to consult on having it done.

Backun did something similar for me awhile ago. Since they don't make a MoBa barrel for the CSG, they shortened a 60mm Rossi barrel (taking some off the top and bottom) to work for my Yamaha. Now, due to the change in temperature here locally and my experience with Legere Signature European Cut reeds playing slightly flatter than my equivalent cane reeds, I'm actually looking at getting it down to 54.5 or 54.0 so I have something that can go above 440 when fully pushed in. Or maybe I'll just go visit Yamaha here instead. :P

Try

both also make their own barrels and perhaps can help

(I think Walter does make some great points)

Yamaha and others make barrels that short (54mm and 56mm) for Oehler/German system, so see if they work first before having your barrel shortened.
