Hello,

I want to buy my 9th grade daughter an intermediate clarinet as a holiday gift. (She has been playing a plastic student one since 5th grade.) I found a used E11 Buffet wood clarinet at a music store online and bought it.

But before the fellow shipped it the next day, he wrote me and said it actually wasn't in as great as condition as they thought, and it wasn't actually wood. Instead, they wanted to offer me an Evette & Schaeffer wood clarinet with two stamps on it that say Evette & Schaeffer, Paris France, Modele Buffet-Crampon. He says it's actually a better clarinet, sounds much better, and is vintage with a serial number B5685.

I'm wondering if this is a good quality instrument and what would be a fair price? They are asking for $500.

I would appreciate any advice you can offer. Thank you so much!

Suzy

I think what the person said is fairly accurate. Between an E11 and an Evette and Schaeffer, I would choose the Evette and Schaeffer (the "Evette" is equivalent to the E11, the E&S more along an E13).

Given it being in good condition, fairly well overhauled and plays fine, I think the price is fair.

FWIW, I play an Evette and Schaeffer, and had some custom tuning work done on it, and found very few clarinets better than it. Your experience probably will NOT mirror mine, but the E&S is a good quality instrument, and I think the price is fair.

One of my former students played one of these that had better intonation than any brand new clarinet in stock here in Auckland NZ... however other ones I played were not nearly as good- so the name alone is not a guarantee. I would ask for the right to return, and get an experienced player/teacher to test the instrument out. It may be an excellent clarinet, but there's really only one way to find out.

The clarinet looks rather old. You may be buying a maintenance hog.

Plus the "B" prefix puts the actual maker in question. The clarinet may not actually be made BY Buffet, but made FOR Buffet. I would pass.

That is a very old instrument. The keywork looks like Melerne. They made some instruments for Buffet from time to time.
