I've just started practicing Baermann's Op 63 No. 15. I've listened to it several times and I've played it several times. When I play it with a metronome, I appear to be playing 144 beats per minute. As these are sixteen notes, (quarter = 1 beat; 4 beats per measure). Do I divide the 144 bpm by 4 to get the actual bpm based on the meter? i.e., 36 beats per minute? Is the 144 the sixteenth beat? Thanks, almost got it.

The Langenus edition of Baermann's Op 63, No. 15 is on pages 34 to 35 and does not give an exact tempo but only the general description "Andante con moto." This exercise is in 4/4 or C common time, which means 4 beats or quarter notes to the bar. If a metronome marking were given, it would probably be in terms of the quarter note, for example quarter note = 60, 80, or 100. If you were playing at quarter note = 60, that would mean you have 60 beats per minute. A rate of 144 beats per minute (quarter note = 144) would be pretty fast for an "Andante," and more like an Allegro molto. You can invest in a very inexpensive electronic metronome or on the Internet even listen to and play along with free metronomes to get a better sense of tempo.

You need to tell us whether the 144 corresponds to the speed of your sixteenth notes or to something else. Yes, if you are playing 144 sixteenth notes per minute (the sixteenths are in time with the clicks at 144 on the metronome) then your quarter notes are 36 per minute, which is a little slow for this etude once you've practiced it.
My advice, though, would be to set the metronome for something slower than sixteenth notes. If the quarter notes are too slow to stay with, try setting the metronome to 72 and letting that be an eighth note. Then the sixteenths go twice as fast and the quarters are each worth two clicks. 144 clicks per minute is a little hard to keep track of.

72 for the eighth note. But, if you can play it any faster, it would give a much better musical result.
