So, a group of my friends have been looking to play a quintet or sextet for a while, but the problem is none of us own a good bass clarinet/ none of us can play bass clarinet... We thought about arranging something specifically for us like rhapsody in blue or some other classical piece. Any ideas for something we could arrange and how to do it?

Well, you could chose to play the bass part on a regular Bb and playing down an octave where possible. If you chose the right music, it may not make that much difference. If you go to Sheet Music Plus and do a search for clarinet quintet you will find a good number of them. Many of the pieces there show a few pages of the music so you can make a good choice. Also lots of the pieces having an alto clarinet part include an alternate Bb. Really your best bet would be to find a good bass somewhere!

You might poke around here

though a lot of the material might well require transposition of some kind.
Concur with johng that you need a bass.

Well our school does have an old vito bass (I think it's a vito its some old brand). but I'm pretty sure it's way out of adjustment. I personally couldn't play middle C, I could do above it, but certain notes were just not speaking. Is there a way to distinguish between my poor playing and the instruments fault? Even if we got the instrument working would it be worth it? I mean the tuning is way out of wack and its just overall not on the same level as the rest of the instruments. By that I mean no one has made it sound good, whether it be because of the set up or because none of us are talented bass players.
