This is a dumb question, but the answer eludes me.
I'm playing a clarinet in Bflat.
My partner is playing in key of C on a basset horn in F.
What key should I be in?

It's G. A horn in F is a perfect 5th above concert pitch (C). So, if you want to go from concert pitch to F horn, you would go a perfect 5th above that to G.
If you want to transpose to a B-flat instrument from a horn in F, you would go a perfect 4th above to G.
And, no, you are not stupid, transposition is hard and confusing. I'm starting it first thing in my conducting class in the fall. :(
Good luck,
Kim
