 Vandoren M15 Trad vs 88
Author: Ben Shaffer

I recently bought a Clarinet on eBay, mouthpiece unknown.
When I received the Clarinet the Mouthpiece turned out to be a Vandoren M15.
It did not have 88 embossed on it and I presume it was the "Trad' version.
The Mouthpiece at least to me sounds outstanding and is a delight to play.
Its got a couple of very small chips right on the tip, that said I'm thinking I wouldn't mind buying another to use and have on hand.
Quick question , what is the difference between the Trad version and the 88?
Why buy one over the other?

Profile 88 only refers to the beak shape. The Profile 88 beak is flatter and thinner.

More important, if you want as close to a duplicate as possible, would be whether it's a Series 13 or Traditional model. Series 13 mouthpieces are designed to play lower (A=440Hz) with a little more mellowness ("darker"), I think by deepening the baffle more than a traditional-style Vandoren blank.

The beak profile is a matter of comfort in your mouth. The Series (13 or traditional) affects the pitch, tone quality and response.

So the M15 I have that just says "M15' and nothing else would be the trad version?
! presume if you have an 88 version its going to say that and also if its an 88 with the 13 pitch it will say on it series "13" as well as "88"?
And then finallyl a plain 88 version will then sound just the same as the M15 trad, but just have a different shaped beak?

The Profile 88 mouthpieces that I have have a big, elongated "88" down the side. The Series 13s have a little "13" down next to the bottom of the table (right side, I think). I don't think the Series 13 mouthpieces come with anything but the Profile 88 beak. The traditional blanks come with either the old style beak (a little rounder across the top) or the 88 beak.

If your mouthpiece has neither an 88 nor a 13, it's probably a Traditional non-88 mouthpiece. As to things sounding "just the same as" other things, that's a gamble you always take - consistency has gotten better as manufacturing has become more digitized, but it isn't perfect.

A Traditional (non-13) M15 should sound the same whether Profile 88 or old-style (traditional) beak, But your comfort level may differ with the beak shape and that could affect the way you sound, at least to yourself.
