Hi,
I have the opportunity to sub today for band. I've done it at least a half dozen times in the past year. For activity period I have all 40 5th grade beginners. They play from
"Standard of Excellence" book 1. Any advice on side comments? Posture? breathing? embouchure? etc.

Well, my 5th graders were fun and eager. During small sectionals I listen to their 8 measure lines and if they perform correctly they are rewarded with a stamp. They are highly motivated. They also like the idea of solo/solo-tutti lines. I had the solo/soli be "those who have pet goldfish." Then, December birthdays etc. At the end , a student said "You should have had the solo/soli be "those that want to play saxophone next year."
I do still wish for feedback.

Sounds like fun for you and them. I would have been terrified.

Hey Runner,
I had many years of band teaching right down the road at Tallmadge and Springfield Twp.; we had some pretty fine bands. That was a long time ago but some things never change.
I'm not sure what you want for feedback. However, one important question is do you have a music education degree? If so, think back to the things you learned in your band method classes. That's where to start with your own self-critique (self-feedback).
If not, you probably need to find a successful band director in your area and spend a few sessions with that person watching what they do. From my perspective, it is hard to give you feedback without observing your instruction.
However, you appear to be finding your way pretty well. Young players really enjoy the solo/soli things and following the method book (in my day it was First Division). Also, structure, discipline, and attention to the director are important non-musical rehearsal requirements.

Thanks for the reply Hank. Yes, I taught band and orchestra for thirteen years starting in 1968. Did many other areas until the last few years before retirement. I had a podium for the large group and did the customary lap/knee/playing positions.
Earlier I had a group of 15 6th grade boys (clarinets and trumpets. On the repeat of "Minka ,Minka " we accelerated (as they were accustomed, and I jumped into the air as they yelled "Hey!" We did that several times.

Runner,
Welcome back to band instruction. It sounds like you have all the tools you need and are well on your way. Keep up the great choreographic stuff.
"Hey"
Hank
